    How is "t" pronounced in "pants"? It doesn't seem to follow the way you outlined in this video.

    • @LearnAcademicEnglish
      @LearnAcademicEnglish День тому

      In that word and others like it, the t sound is unreleased as it moves into the next sound, the s. So what happens is that the tongue goes to make the stopped t sound but instead of releasing the air that comes after t, the tongue moves into the next sound (the s). This kind of natural movement from one sound to another sound is very common in English and, in fact, in all languages. I hope that helps.

    Hey, you finally got around to making this video! Awesome work, Jenna! I just wanna vouch for this bit 12:12 and say that even though I'm not a native English speaker and my pronunciation is not perfect, I still was able to hear some these mistakes made by Brazilians when I was learning Portuguese in the past, so they are important. PS: I'd like to add one thing that's recently come to my attention. I think in some regional British accents, the Essex accent in particular, the dark L is pronounced in a similar way to that in Brazilian Portuguese. And, Jenna, I'm only sharing this because I know it'll pique your interest, but I hope no Brazilian will use it as an excuse to continue to mispronounce the dark L! 👋😅🗣

    Good morning! I have a question which doesn't relate to your video if you don't mind. I heard one of the English series about a friend of a girl who asked her who is elder you or your sister? She replied that she younger than I'm. Why she didn't than me instead? Could you illustrate?

    • @LearnAcademicEnglish
      @LearnAcademicEnglish 6 днів тому

      You can respond with "She is younger than me." or "She is younger than I am." In the second case, it needs to be a clause with subject and verb. It is not possible to say "than I'm" at the end of a sentence because we don't end sentences with the contraction "I'm". I hope that helps!

    When is "the" pronounced as "thee"? Similarly, when is "a" (article) pronounced as "ei"?

      We can pronounce both words with the clear vowel sound "thee" and a as in "ei" when we are speaking clearly/slowly or when we are emphasizing the word for some reason. We also often (but not always!) pronounce "the" like "thee" when the next word starts with a vowel, like "the end."

    After having read almost exclusively in English ever since I left Russia in 1999 at the age of 20, the speed at which I comprehend a text in Russian is still about double the speed at which I comprehend a text in English. I think that maybe the neuron connections formed earlier in life are much stronger than those formed at a more advanced age. I wonder whether this slowness of reading due to the slowness of comprehension can be overcome.

      Interesting! I do think it is possible if you are completely immersed in the language and you read in English every day or almost every day. It sounds like you are already doing that. I think it depends on a few factors but if you continue to read in English daily, your comprehension and reading speed will continue to improve ☺️
